South Korea has made 26 appearances in world championships tournaments, and have gone between Division II and Division I hockey since 2000. South Korea’s ice hockey team is ranked 31st in the world, with Bulgaria ranking at 32, and Mexico ranking at 33. Last season, the Korean men’s league played in the Division I Championship in Hungary and they defeated the Netherlands six to three.

The Gangneung Coastal Cluster is where the ice hockey events at the 2018 Olympics are going to happen. There will be both men and women’s ice hockey. They are going to play in two different arenas. One is 60 by 30 meters, seats 10,000 visitors, and the other is the same size, but seats 6,000. To prepare for the games, six new stadiums are being refurbished. There is less than two years to wrap up the construction. After the Sochi games in 2014, PyeongChang began its efforts to bring global attention to the city. Events are being held in PyeongChang, Gangneung and Jeongseon, with the opening ceremonies in PyeongChang. The opening ceremonies are going to be held at the Gowon training ground in Hoenggye. It is named Olympic Park, and it is just two kilometers away from Alpensia, in PyeongChang. A temporary, 50,000-capacity stadium is going to be built on 80,000 square meters. After the Games, it is going to be disassembled.
