Will North Korea’s Leader come to the Winter Olympics?
Print This Article

A few weeks ago, North Korea agreed to and held talks with South Korea. In the unorthodox meeting, the two nations, still technically at war, discussed matters such as the upcoming South Korean Winter Olympics and military drills. The result of the talks was that North Korea agreed to send a delegation of athletes to the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, and that the two nations would even create a joint women’s hockey team. Along with its athletes, North Korea is sending a delegation that includes some officials. Also, just today, Kim Jon-un, the North Korean president, announced that he would send his sister to the Olympics as well. North Korea’s unprecedented and extensive participation in the Games is interesting and surprising, and raises questions about whether the leader himself will come attend the international event. If Kim Jong-un shows up in Pyeongchang, it could go a long way towards potential peace talks between his nation and South Korea. The entire world will be watching the Games, and many would enjoy seeing the North Korean President there.
